Big Art Mob
Channel 4 · 2006–2012
Big Art Mob set out to create the first comprehensive map of all public art in the world. Commissioned by Channel 4 to accompany The Big Art Project documentary series, it let anyone photograph and geotag public artworks using their camera phone. The series reached over one million viewers.
By 2012, more than 13,000 verified public artworks had been mapped. The platform included iOS apps with walking-route creators for art walks and Google Street View integration. In August 2012 I relaunched it independently with a global scope, supported by Arts Council England and The Art Fund.
The project was featured on NPR and won multiple awards:
- Royal Television Society Innovation Award — “On The Move” (2007)
- MediaGuardian Innovation Award — Community Engagement (2008)
- BAFTA TV Award nomination — Interactivity (2008)
- BAFTA TV Craft Award nominations — Interactive Content and Interactive Innovation (2008)
- Civic Trust Award (2010)
